Umayr ibn Wahb al-Jumahi

ʿUmayr ibn Wahb al-Jumaḥī was a Qurashi nobleman of Banū Jumaḥ and a cousin of Ṣafwān ibn Umayyah. Shortly after the Battle of Badr (2 AH), while sitting with Ṣafwān in the Ḥijr of the Kaʿbah, he lamented the Muslim victory and the deaths of his kinsmen. He confided that the only things preventing him from traveling to Madinah to assassinate the Prophet ﷺ were his debts and concern for his family, his son Wahb was among the Badr prisoners. Ṣafwān immediately offered to discharge all his debts and provide for his family, sealing their secret pact.

ʿUmayr poisoned his sword and set out alone for Madinah, a two-week journey. When he arrived at the masjid, ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb recognized him by his eyes and the sword at his side, immediately suspecting treachery. He seized ʿUmayr by the collar and brought him before the Prophet ﷺ.

The Prophet ﷺ ordered ʿUmar to release him, then asked his reason for coming. ʿUmayr claimed he came to ransom his son. The Prophet then confronted him with the exact private words exchanged with Ṣafwān in the Ḥijr, knowledge ʿUmayr knew was impossible for any human to possess. Overwhelmed, ʿUmayr immediately declared: "Ashhadu annaka Rasūlullāh", I bear witness that you are the Messenger of Allah. He converted on the spot.

The Prophet commanded that ʿUmayr be taught Islam and the Qurʾān, and freed his son Wahb from captivity at no charge. ʿUmayr returned to Makkah and began openly preaching Islam; a number of people accepted Islam through him. Ṣafwān, upon hearing of his conversion, vowed he would never speak to ʿUmayr again.

Years later, at the Conquest of Makkah (8 AH), ʿUmayr sought an amān (promise of safety) from the Prophet ﷺ for Ṣafwān. He found Ṣafwān hiding at the coast near Juddah, intending to flee. ʿUmayr convinced him to return to the Prophet, and Ṣafwān eventually witnessed the truth of Islam, both men embraced the Prophet together, completing a long arc of qadar that began with a plot to take the Prophet's life.
