Umayr ibn Wahb al-Jumahi

ʿUmayr ibn Wahb al-Jumaḥī was a Qurashī scout from the Banū Jumaḥ clan who served the Quraysh army at the Battle of Badr (Ramaḍān 2 AH). He was considered the most skilled and experienced scout in the Qurashī forces. On the morning of the battle, the Quraysh sent him on a reconnaissance mission to estimate the size and capabilities of the Muslim army. He circled the entire plain of Badr and came back with a remarkably precise estimate: approximately 300 men, 'plus or minus some.' His full assessment was honest and alarming: these are young men of Yathrib with nothing but their swords, no significant armor, no cavalry, no javelin lines, but their very under-armament would make them more dangerous, because desperation makes fighters ferocious. He predicted: 'By Allāh, I do not think you will be able to kill a single one of them without one of you being killed first. And if 300 of you die, what have you gained?' His assessment was ignored by Abū Jahl, who only wanted the numbers and dismissed his strategic advice. ʿUmayr later accepted Islām, there is a famous narration of him planning to assassinate the Prophet ﷺ after Badr, but upon meeting him in Madīnah, the Prophet revealed the secret that ʿUmayr had shared with no one, leading to ʿUmayr's immediate conversion.
