Biography
Umayya ibn Khalaf was from the Banū Jumaḥ clan of Quraysh and was the original owner of Bilāl ibn Abī Rabāḥ. He was among the most vicious persecutors of the early Muslims.
He personally organized Bilāl's torture: placing a massive boulder on his chest in the midday desert heat, every morning, leaving him there without food or water for the entire day. He also handed Bilāl over to the ruffians and teenagers of Makkah who would drag him through the streets with a rope around his neck. Two non-Muslim witnesses, Ḥassān ibn Thābit and ʿAmr ibn al-ʿĀṣ, separately documented the severity of what they saw.
He sold Bilāl to Abū Bakr al-Ṣiddīq, who freed him.
Umayya was killed at the Battle of Badr, killed by Bilāl himself, along with other companions of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم. Bilāl had recognized him at Badr and called out "Umayya ibn Khalaf! If he survives, I will not!" Al-jazāʾu min jinsi al-ʿamal. The man who had the slave tortured was himself killed by the hand of that slave, in the very first major battle of Islām.
