Umm Mistah

Umm Misṭaḥ was the mother of Misṭaḥ ibn Uthāthah and a first cousin of Abū Bakr al-Ṣiddīq, effectively an aunt figure to ʿĀʾishah, and a regular companion on her trips to relieve herself outside the settlement, as was customary before homes had indoor facilities. Walking back from one such trip during the period the slander against ʿĀʾishah was spreading (5 AH), Umm Misṭaḥ tripped on her garment and, still privately preoccupied and furious with her own son over his role in spreading the rumor, blurted out a curse against him. When ʿĀʾishah, unaware of what was happening, rebuked her for cursing a Badr veteran, Umm Misṭaḥ, assuming ʿĀʾishah already knew, revealed the content of the slander to her directly, the moment ʿĀʾishah first learned what was being said about her.
