Umm Ruman

Umm Rūmān was the wife of Abū Bakr al-Ṣiddīq and the mother of ʿĀʾishah bint Abī Bakr. When ʿĀʾishah came to her parents' home distraught after learning of the slander being spread against her (5 AH), Umm Rūmān tried to console her by observing that successful, deeply loved marriages naturally attract jealousy and gossip from other women, without directly confirming or denying the truth of what was being said. When the Prophet (ﷺ) came in person to speak with ʿĀʾishah about the matter and ʿĀʾishah asked her mother to answer on her behalf, Umm Rūmān admitted she did not know what to say, leaving ʿĀʾishah to respond for herself.
