Usayd ibn Hudayr

A leader of the Banū ʿAbd al-Ashhal clan and close friend of Saʿd ibn Muʿādh. Saʿd sent him to expel Muṣʿab ibn ʿUmayr from Yathrib; he arrived brandishing his spear, a sign of war. Muṣʿab calmly invited him to listen first. Usayd sat down, heard the message of Islam, and converted on the spot. When he returned to Saʿd, his changed demeanor was immediately visible, Saʿd said: "This is not the same man who left us." His transformation moved Saʿd to go hear Muṣʿab himself, leading to Saʿd's conversion and the mass conversion of the entire Banū ʿAbd al-Ashhal.

A hadith in Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī records that whenever Usayd recited the Quran at night, he would see light descending from above and his animals would grow agitated. He reported this to the Prophet ﷺ, who said: "Those are the Sakīnat al-Raḥmān, the angels of Allāh's mercy coming to listen to your recitation."
