Utbah ibn Ghazwan

ʿUtbah ibn Ghazwān رضي الله عنه was one of the early Muslims from Quraysh, among the seven or eight handpicked by the Prophet ﷺ for the Sariyyat al-Nakhlah (Rajab 2 AH). On the journey, he and Saʿd ibn Abī Waqqāṣ shared a camel that broke its tether and ran off into the desert. The two insisted the rest of the group continue the mission without them, leaving them stranded with no mount in the open desert. They eventually recovered the camel and returned safely to Madīnah, arriving after the rest of the party, which was why the Prophet ﷺ initially refused to release the Nakhlah prisoners until Saʿd and ʿUtbah arrived safely. ʿUtbah later became the founder of the city of Baṣra (in modern Iraq) during the early Islamic conquests under ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb, and he is regarded as one of the eminent Companions.
