Waqid ibn Abdillah al-Tamimi

وَاقِد بْن عَبْدِ اللهِ التَّمِيمِيّ

Wāqid ibn ʿAbdillāh al-Tamīmī

Biography

Wāqid ibn ʿAbdillāh al-Tamīmī was an elderly archer at the Battle of Mu'tah whose aim remained strong even as his eyesight failed. Unable to see his targets clearly, he had two companions lift him atop a shield and direct him, "turn more this way, more that way", so he could keep shooting as part of the archer line Khālid ibn al-Walīd used to hold back the Roman advance.

Significance

His improvised method of fighting despite failing eyesight illustrates the archer-line tactic Khalid ibn al-Walid used to slow the Roman onslaught at Mu'tah.
