Waraqah ibn Nawfal

Waraqah ibn Nawfal, a cousin of Khadijah, was one of the Ḥunafāʾ who rejected idolatry and sought the religion of Ibrahim, embracing Christianity and learning its scriptures in Hebrew. Old and blind, it was he to whom Khadijah brought the Prophet ﷺ after the first revelation; he recognised it at once, 'This is the Nāmūs whom Allah sent to Musa', foretold that his people would expel him, and wished he could live to support him. He died soon after, the first to affirm the message.

Waraqah was the second person to believe in the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم after Khadijah, and the first person from outside the Prophet's household to affirm the prophethood. He converted without saying any Shahādah, because there was no Shahādah yet. He converted by saying: 'You are a Prophet of Allah.' He was the first Ṣaḥābī, the first member of the Ummah of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم. He died shortly after this encounter. The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم later said that he had seen Waraqah in a vision wearing beautiful white garments in Jannah. He was the first of this Ummah to enter Paradise, without having prayed a single prayer, because there was no prayer yet to pray.
