Yasar

Yasār was an Abyssinian slave who was with the pagan camp of Banū Sulaym and Ghaṭafān during their skirmish against the Muslims at Qarqarat al-Kudr (approximately 7 days after the Battle of Badr, 2 AH). When the pagans fled at the sight of the advancing Muslim forces, Yasār was left behind and captured. While staying among the Muslims he was moved by what he witnessed of them and converted to Islam. The Ṣaḥābī who had captured him then said to the Prophet ﷺ: 'O Messenger of Allah, he is yours, he has become a good Muslim.' The Prophet ﷺ freed him immediately, as was his established practice with any slave who came into his possession. However, Yasār chose to remain with the Prophet ﷺ as a servant, and he became one of the khuddam (servants) of the Prophet ﷺ for the remainder of the Madinan period.
