The Destruction of al-Uzza
historical noteShaykh Yasir Qadhi explains:
During the nineteen days the Prophet ﷺ sent parties to invite the neighbouring tribes and to destroy the great public idols, the temple idols, as distinct from the home idols each family was told to smash itself. Khālid ibn al-Walīd was sent to al-ʿUzzā (named in the Qurʾān), and others to Manāt and to Suwāʿ. When the idol's keepers saw Khālid coming, one flung an axe about al-ʿUzzā's neck and cried, "O ʿUzzā, defend yourself, I must flee!" It defended nothing, and Khālid destroyed it. Within days the great idols of the Ḥijāz were gone.
