The Tafseer of the First Seven Verses of Sūrat al-Muddaththir

historical note

After the Fatra, the silence of approximately forty days, the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم was descending from the mountain when he heard his name being called. He looked forward: nothing. He looked behind: nothing. He looked left, right, no one. Then, finally, he looked up, and there was Jibrīl, seated on a throne between the heavens and the earth, in his original form, blocking the horizon. The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم trembled and fell to his knees, then got up and ran home, calling out: زَمِّلُونِي دَثِّرُونِي, "Cover me up, wrap me up."

Jibrīl followed him. The revelation did not come on the mountain, it came in the house of Khadijah رضي الله عنها, while the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم was wrapped in his cloak. And that cloak, that دِثَار (dithār), that shawl, is the very subject of what Jibrīl now said:

يَا أَيُّهَا الْمُدَّثِّرُ ۝ قُمْ فَأَنذِرْ ۝ وَرَبَّكَ فَكَبِّرْ ۝ وَثِيَابَكَ فَطَهِّرْ ۝ وَالرُّجْزَ فَاهْجُرْ ۝ وَلَا تَمْنُن تَسْتَكْثِرُ ۝ وَلِرَبِّكَ فَاصْبِرْ

"O you who is wrapped in a garment! Stand up and warn. And glorify your Lord. And purify your garments. And abandon filth. And do not give to get more. And for your Lord, be patient." (al-Muddaththir 74:1–7)

يَا أَيُّهَا الْمُدَّثِّرُ: O you wrapped in a mantle

He is addressing the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم by his immediate physical situation, wrapped in the cloak, in the warmth and shelter of the household. But the symbolism goes deeper. The muda-ththir is someone settled into comfort, at rest, sheltered from the outside world. And the tone is gentle but firm: that comfort is about to end.

قُمْ: Stand up

Not "preach" or "speak", but qum: stand up from where you are sitting. Get up from the position of ease. The first word of the mission is a verb of physical action, of movement, of rising. Leave the safety blanket. Get up.

فَأَنذِرْ: And warn

The mission is warning (indhār) before it is anything else. Not inviting first, not comforting first, warn. The stakes are real. People are walking toward a fire and do not know it. The first job of a Prophet is to make clear what the consequences of misguidance are.

وَرَبَّكَ فَكَبِّرْ: And glorify your Lord

While you are warning, while you are in the public arena, your connection to your Lord must remain the axis around which everything else rotates. Greatness belongs to Allah and to no one else. And the act of saying Allāhu Akbar, daily, in every prayer, keeps that axis in place.

وَثِيَابَكَ فَطَهِّرْ: And purify your garments

Literally: have clean clothes. In the Arabian context of addressing people in public, your appearance matters. But the deeper meaning runs alongside: purify yourself. Make your character and your deeds as clean as you would have your clothes. Whatever stains the inner person is as much a concern as what stains the outer one.

وَالرُّجْزَ فَاهْجُرْ: And abandon idols

Rujz (رُجْز), filth, abomination. Here it refers to the idols of the Jāhiliyyah. Leave them completely. This is not a gradual process. فَاهْجُرْ, cut ties with it. The Arabic verb of abandonment is used, not the verb of distancing or disengaging.

وَلَا تَمْنُن تَسْتَكْثِرُ: And do not give in order to receive more

Manna (مَنَّ) in Arabic means to remind someone of a favor you have done for them, to keep a debt alive. When you give and then say, "Remember when I helped you?", that is manna. Allah told the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم from day one: your giving must be purely for Allah. You do not give to have a favor returned. This is why the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم was prohibited from taking Zakāh or charity, he gave without account. Qul lā asʾalukum ʿalayhi mālā (Yūsuf 12:104), "Say: I ask no payment from you for this."

وَلِرَبِّكَ فَاصْبِرْ: And for your Lord, be patient

The last verse. The one that runs through everything that comes after. There is an implicit acknowledgment in these words that what is coming will require everything. Patience is not a side note, it is the condition of the entire mission. And the only kind of patience that is sustainable, the only patience that does not crack under years of persecution and exile and grief, is patience that is for your Lord, not for results, not for outcomes, but for Allah سبحانه وتعالى alone.
