The Night Before Badr: The Prophet's Vigil, the Rain, and the Dream
spiritualDr. Yasir Qadhi narrates the night before the Battle of Badr, a night of extraordinary spiritual intensity, Divine mercy, and Prophetic vigil.
❧The Prophet ﷺ Prays All Night
Narrated in Musnad Imām Aḥmad: the Prophet ﷺ spent the entire night of 16–17 Ramaḍān in prayer, standing in sajdah, and making duʿāʾ to Allāh. His duʿāʾ was:
'O Allāh, if You destroy this group, in tahlika hādhihī al-ʿuṣābah (إِنْ تَهْلِكْ هَذِهِ الْعُصَابَة), You will not be worshipped on earth. O Allāh, I am the final Prophet. After me there is no Prophet. If we fail here, there will be no more Prophets to re-establish Your worship on earth. O Allāh, give us what You have promised.'
ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib رضي الله عنه narrated (Musnad Imām Aḥmad): 'If you could only have seen us on the night of Badr, every single one of us was in a deep sleep, except for the Prophet ﷺ. He was praying behind a tree, making duʿāʾ until morning. Not one of us was awake.'
Ibn Masʿūd رضي الله عنه narrated (reported by al-Ṭabarānī): 'In my entire life, I have never seen anyone plead and beg as much as the Prophet ﷺ did on the night of Badr.'
❧The Miraculous Sleep and Rain
In the middle of the night, light rain began to fall. Not a downpour, just a drizzle. The Companions scattered to shelter themselves under trees, shrubs, or camels. Their belongings got wet. And then Allāh gave them a gift: He caused them to fall into a deep, peaceful sleep.
Allāh describes both gifts, the rain and the sleep, in Sūrat al-Anfāl (8:11):
> Idh yughashshīkumu-n-nuʿāsa amanatan minhu wa-yunazzilu ʿalaykum mina-s-samāʾi māʾan liyuṭahhirakum bihi wa-yudh-hiba ʿankum rijza-sh-shayṭāni wa-liyarbiṭa ʿalā qulūbikum wa-yuthabbita bihi-l-aqdām
The verse reveals a multi-layered miracle:
1. Nuʿās (drowsiness): Allāh caused them to sleep, amanatan minhu, as a peace and security from Him. The night before a major exam you cannot sleep. The night before a battle against a force triple your size, you especially cannot sleep. But Allāh granted them sleep so they would wake rested, sharp, and strong.
2. Rain as physical purification: Liyuṭahhirakum bihi, the rain washed them, like a fresh bath before the most important moment of their lives.
3. Rain as spiritual purification: Yudh-hiba ʿankum rijza-sh-shayṭān, the filth of Shayṭān was washed away; the fear, the doubt, the whispers.
4. Rain as tactical advantage: Yuthabbita bihi-l-aqdām, to make their footsteps firm. In a desert, dry sand is like walking in thick powder, exhausting. Too much rain creates mud, impassable. The perfect amount of rain compacts the sand into firm, concrete-like ground. Allāh gave the Muslim side exactly the right amount. Their footing was solid. The Quraysh side, according to some narrations (with weaker isnād), received the heavier downpour, making their ground muddy.
❧The Prophet's Dream
Ibn Kathīr (raḥimahu-llāh) holds the opinion that the Prophet ﷺ did eventually doze briefly, and it was in this brief doze that Allāh showed him the famous dream. Allāh references it in Q 8:43:
'When Allāh showed them to you in your dream as few. And if He had shown them to you as many, you would have despaired and argued among yourselves. But Allāh protected [you].'
Allāh showed the Prophet ﷺ the Qurashī army as qalīlan, as few, as small. This was not misinformation. Allāh is Aṣdaqu min Allāhi ḥadīthā, no one speaks truer than Allāh. He showed the Prophet ﷺ a real section of the army, not the whole. The Prophet ﷺ woke with a surge of confidence. The tactical effect of the dream was mercy: Allāh gave him the feeling of victory before it happened, so he could wake up, lead salāt al-Fajr with full certainty, and face the morning of the 17th as the commander of a winning army.
❧The Morning of 17 Ramaḍān 2 AH: Possibly a Friday
The Prophet ﷺ rose and called: Aṣ-ṣalāh! Aṣ-ṣalāh! The army woke for Fajr. Thus began the 17th of Ramaḍān 2 AH, corresponding approximately to March 17, 624 CE. According to some scholars, this was a Friday. It is Yawm al-Furqān, the Day of Distinction between truth and falsehood.
