The Lovers of Banu Jadhimah

historical note

Shaykh Yasir Qadhi explains:

One tragedy of Khālid's mistaken killings at Banū Jadhīmah was not mentioned before. Among the captives about to be executed was a young man, betrothed to be married. He begged to be taken to the women's side, and there recited a beautiful love-poem to his betrothed (preserved in Ibn Isḥāq); wailing, she answered him in verse, and as he was killed she took him and he died in her arms.

When the Prophet heard of it he grew more angry still and said, أَلَيْسَ مِنْكُمْ رَجُلٌ رَحِيم, "Was there not among you a single man of mercy" to have stopped it? A striking window onto his tenderness, that even the romance of two lovers moved his mercy.
