ʿĀʾishah's menses and her ʿumrah from al-Tanʿīm

historical

Shaykh Yasir Qadhi explains:

ʿĀʾishah narrates that when they first reached Mecca, on the 4th of Dhū al-Ḥijjah, the Prophet came into her tent to find her weeping, and asked at once, مَا لَكِ؟ أَنَفِسْتِ؟, "what is the matter? have you begun your menses?", reading her in an instant, so in tune with her. Our mother ʿĀʾishah was crying, as our sisters do when the cycle comes in the last ten of Ramaḍān or in Ḥajj and ʿUmrah, she was not the first, weeping there just outside Mecca, thinking, "now what will I do?" He comforted her: كَتَبَهُ اللَّهُ عَلَى بَنَاتِ آدَمَ, "Allāh has decreed this for the daughters of Ādam; do all that the pilgrims do, except ṭawāf." So she went to ʿArafah, Muzdalifah, and Minā, threw the pebbles, made her duʿāʾ, everything but the ṭawāf, and once her menses ended, on some day in Minā, she performed Ṭawāf al-Ifāḍah, the ṭawāf of Ḥajj.

"Your wives will have two, and I one?"

As they prepared to leave on the 13th, ʿĀʾishah protested: were his other wives to go home having done both an ʿUmrah and a Ḥajj, while she, having done Ifrād, went home with the Ḥajj alone? "That is not fair." The Prophet told her it sufficed, that she had done the ṭawāf and had it complete; but she insisted, "your wives will have double and I one? No", and, as good husbands do when a wife insists, he yielded. He told her brother ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abī Bakr to take her to al-Tanʿīm, the nearest point on the Ḥaram's boundary to Mecca, since the Ḥaram is not a true circle but oblong, and al-Tanʿīm its shortest distance out, and there to have her enter iḥrām and perform an ʿUmrah. Tellingly, ʿAbd al-Raḥmān did not perform an ʿUmrah himself, nor did any of the Ṣaḥābah repeat theirs, which shows that a second ʿUmrah from within Mecca is permitted, but not the encouraged thing to do; ʿĀʾishah insisted, so let her, and no big deal is to be made of it. The Prophet had already set out, and they rejoined him on the road. He had spent three nights at Minā, the 13th as well, though most leave on the 12th, performed Ṭawāf al-Wadāʿ, the farewell ṭawāf, by night, and turned back on the journey to Medina.
