The Pledge at Safa: No Hijrah After the Conquest
historicalShaykh Yasir Qadhi explains:
The Prophet ﷺ then went to Mount Ṣafā and sat to take the pledge of allegiance from all who would embrace Islam, and they came in throngs, the living image of وَرَأَيْتَ النَّاسَ يَدْخُلُونَ فِي دِينِ اللَّهِ أَفْوَاجًا, "you see the people entering the religion of Allah in crowds." And how fitting: the public daʿwah had begun on Ṣafā twenty years before, and now on the very same hill it came full circle, the Prophet ﷺ sitting where he had once stood.
❧No Hijrah After the Conquest
A Companion brought his still-pagan brother, asking that he be given the blessings of Hijrah as the emigrants had. The Prophet ﷺ said, لَا هِجْرَةَ بَعْدَ الفَتْح, "there is no hijrah after the Conquest" (a mutawātir hadith, in Bukhārī and Muslim). The one, defining Hijrah to Medina was closed; its obligation on every Muslim was lifted. But he added, وَلَٰكِنْ جِهَادٌ وَنِيَّة, "rather jihād and intention": those blessings could still be reached through striving in Allah's cause and through a sincere heart, "and when you are called to march out, then march."
