Abdullah ibn Jahsh

ʿAbdullāh ibn Jaḥsh رضي الله عنه was a cousin of the Prophet ﷺ, his mother Umaymah bint ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib was the Prophet's aunt. He was the brother of ʿUbayd Allāh ibn Jaḥsh (who later apostatized in Abyssinia) and Zaynab bint Jaḥsh (who became a wife of the Prophet ﷺ). He was among the early Muslims who migrated to Abyssinia and later made the Hijra to Madīnah. In Rajab 2 AH the Prophet ﷺ selected him to lead the Sariyyat al-Nakhlah, the first armed Companion expedition, handing him a sealed letter whose contents were not revealed until two days into the march. When ʿAbdullāh ibn Jaḥsh read the letter and understood the mission was walking into effectively enemy territory, he told his seven men: "Whoever desires shahādah and is eager to meet Allāh, come with me, and whoever wishes to return to Madīnah, go; there is no shame." Not a single man turned back. He later died a shahīd at the Battle of Uḥud (3 AH), having made a celebrated duʿāʾ the night before asking Allāh for the most glorious death possible.
