Biography
ʿAbdullāh ibn Masʿūd رضي الله عنه was the sixth person to accept Islām. He was not of the nobility of Quraysh, he was a young man from the Yemeni tribe of Huzayl working as a hired shepherd for ʿUqba ibn Abī Muʿayṭ, one of the chief enemies of Islām.
His conversion story: one day the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم and Abū Bakr came to his fields, thirsty, and asked him for milk. He said, honestly and precisely, 'I cannot give you what is not mine.' The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم then asked for one of the she-goats that had stopped giving milk. He placed his hand on its udder, made duʿāʾ, and the udder filled in front of Ibn Masʿūd's eyes. They milked it and drank. He asked who they were, was told, and converted on the spot.
The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم later said: 'If you want to learn how to recite the Quran, recite it the way Ibn Masʿūd does.' Ibn Masʿūd himself said: 'I learnt more than seventy sūrahs, more than two-thirds of the Quran, directly from the mouth of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم.'
