Biography
ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿAwf رضي الله عنه was one of the four earliest converts through Abū Bakr, already in his early thirties when he accepted Islām. He was one of the Ten Companions promised Paradise.
When he made the Hijra to Madīnah, Quraysh had stripped him of everything, he arrived with only the clothes on his back. An Anṣārī companion offered to split his property and even his household with him. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān declined the property and said: 'Just show me where the marketplace is.' With a small amount of food as starting capital, he went to the market and began trading. Within a short time he had earned enough to get married and establish himself. His business became so blessed that he became one of the wealthiest men in Madīnah. He was known for his extraordinary generosity in the path of Allah.
