Biography
Abū Jahl, whose real name was ʿAmr ibn Hishām, was a chief of the Banu Makhzūm clan of Quraysh, and the most tenacious enemy of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم. The Muslims called him Abū Jahl, 'Father of Ignorance,' as a counter to the title 'Abū al-Ḥakam' (Father of Wisdom) by which his clan called him.
When the Prophet's صلى الله عليه وسلم infant son ʿAbdullāh died, Abū Jahl ran through the streets of Makkah crying: 'Qad batara Muḥammadun!, His lineage has been cut off!' He cheered the death of an infant because the Arabs measured a man's existence by his male heirs. Allah answered with Sūrat al-Kawthar:
إِنَّ شَانِئَكَ هُوَ الْأَبْتَرُ
'Indeed it is the one who hates you who is cut off.' Today his name is known only by those who hate and despise him. He was killed at the Battle of Badr.
Abū Jahl's real name was ʿAmr ibn Hishām. Before Islām, he was known as Abū al-Ḥakam, the Father of Wisdom. The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم renamed him Abū Jahl, the Father of Ignorance, after his consistent choice of arrogance over truth. He is called by the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم the Firʿawn of my Ummah, the Pharaoh of this community.
Three senior Quraysh leaders, Abū Jahl, Abū Sufyān ibn Ḥarb, and al-Akhnas ibn Sharīq, each secretly crept to the Prophet's صلى الله عليه وسلم house on three separate nights to listen to his Tahajjud recitation, bumping into each other every morning. When al-Akhnas later asked Abū Jahl for his honest verdict on the Quran, he gave the most candid self-indictment in the Seerah: "The Banū Manāf and us, we have always competed. When they gave food, we gave food. When they gave water, we gave water. We were two horses racing neck-and-neck. And now they come and say they have a Prophet whom Allah inspires from the heavens. Wallāhi, as long as I live, I will never follow him." He did not deny the truth. He rejected it because of tribal pride.
Significance
Abū Jahl embodies the Jāhilī opposition to the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم. Allah's response to his mockery, Sūrat al-Kawthar, turned his taunt about being 'cut off' back upon himself for eternity.
