The Family of Yasir: The First Martyrs of Islam

story

Of all the early Muslim families who were persecuted in Makkah, none suffered what the family of Yāsir suffered. Because most persecution was individual, one person tortured in isolation. The family of Yāsir was tortured together. Husband, wife, and two sons, in front of each other. There is no greater human pain than watching those you love suffer and being unable to stop it.

Yāsir ibn ʿĀmir was a Yemeni who had come to Makkah without family or tribe, a classic outsider. He had become a Mawlā of the Banū Makhzūm. He married a slave woman named Sumayyah, and they had two sons: ʿAbdullāh and ʿAmmār. The whole family was in the lowest possible position in Meccan society: no Qurashī lineage, no independent tribal protection, entirely dependent on the goodwill of their Mawlā clan.

When all four of them accepted Islām, Abū Jahl coordinated their public torture in the open sands. They were taken out in the midday heat, all four of them, and what was done to one was seen by the others.

The Prophet's صلى الله عليه وسلم words

The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم would pass by them being tortured. He could not physically intervene, he had no power to stop it. But he said to them, and this hadīth is authentic:

صَبْرًا آلَ يَاسِرٍ، فَإِنَّ مَوْعِدَكُمُ الْجَنَّةُ

"Be patient, O family of Yāsir, your appointed place is Paradise."

The promise was not vague. It was specific: your place is Jannah. Sealed. Fixed.

Yāsir and Sumayyah: the first martyrs

Yāsir was killed, narrations differ on exactly how; some say he was torn apart by horses, others say otherwise. The details are uncertain, but the fact is not: he died for his faith before he could see Islām rise.

Sumayyah bint Khayyāṭ رضي الله عنها was a slave woman, an older woman, with no power and no protection. And she did not break. When Abū Jahl came to her, she rebuked him to his face, the act of a person who has already decided they have nothing left to lose. Abū Jahl killed her with his own spear, driving it through her body. She became the first person to die as a martyr in Islām.

ʿAbdullāh, the older son, was also killed.

ʿAmmār: the crisis of conscience

ʿAmmār ibn Yāsir رضي الله عنه was the youngest, perhaps fifteen years old. He had watched his father die. He had watched his mother die. He had watched his brother die. And then Quraysh turned on him.

He broke. He said what they wanted him to say.

As soon as they released him, he ran, not home, not to safety. He ran to Dār al-Arqam, where the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم was, and he came in weeping. He said:

"Yā Rasūlallāh, I have said words of kufr. They made me say it. What do I do?"

The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم asked him one question: "How do you find your heart?"

ʿAmmār said: "Firm in Imān, Yā Rasūlallāh. It has not moved."

The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said: "Then if they return and do this to you again, do the same."

There is no sin. The tongue was coerced. The heart was never touched.

And Allah revealed, in response to this very moment, in Sūrat al-Naḥl: مَن كَفَرَ بِاللَّهِ مِن بَعْدِ إِيمَانِهِ إِلَّا مَنْ أُكْرِهَ وَقَلْبُهُ مُطْمَئِنٌّ بِالْإِيمَانِ, "Whoever disbelieves in Allah after their belief, except for one who is coerced while their heart is secure in faith, upon them is the wrath of Allah." (al-Naḥl 16:106). This verse was given for ʿAmmār.

The divine status of these three

Sūrat al-Anʿām contains a verse of extraordinary praise about this group, Ṣuhayb, Bilāl, and ʿAmmār are the ones scholars identify as its context. Allah says to the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم: وَلَا تَطْرُدِ الَّذِينَ يَدْعُونَ رَبَّهُم بِالْغَدَاةِ وَالْعَشِيِّ, "Do not drive away those who call upon their Lord morning and evening." And further: مَا عَلَيْكَ مِنْ حِسَابِهِم مِّن شَيْءٍ وَمَا مِنْ حِسَابِكَ عَلَيْهِم مِّن شَيْءٍ فَتَطْرُدَهُمْ فَتَكُونَ مِنَ الْخَاسِرِينَ, "If you were to drive them away, you would be from the losers." (al-Anʿām 6:52). Allah told His Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم: if you reject these three, you would be the loser. Their status with Allah was that high.
