Abu Sufyan ibn Harb
أَبُو سُفْيَانَ بْنُ حَرْبAbū Sufyān ibn Ḥarb
Meccan leader · Later companion
Biography
Abū Sufyān Ṣakhr ibn Ḥarb was the most senior political figure of the Banū Umayya clan of Quraysh, and, after the death of several elders, effectively the principal leader of Makkah. He was a statesman in every sense: measured, strategic, unwilling to say anything he hadn't carefully considered. Ibn Ḥajar notes that Muʿāwiyah, whom scholars consider the best political leader the Ummah produced, inherited this quality from his father.
Three times Abū Sufyān secretly went to listen to the Prophet's صلى الله عليه وسلم Tahajjud recitation in the dead of night, encountering Abū Jahl and al-Akhnas ibn Sharīq at the same spot each morning. When al-Akhnas asked him his opinion of the Quran, he said: "Some of what I heard I understood, and other parts were beyond my comprehension." He would not commit. But inside, something was happening.
He was one of the principal opponents of Islām throughout the Meccan and early Medinan period. He led the Quraysh at Uḥud, at Khandaq, and organized the coalition for those battles. He was the political architect of Quraysh's resistance.
Yet he converted at the Conquest of Makkah, when there was no worldly advantage in converting, because Makkah had already fallen. The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم honored him: "Whoever enters the house of Abū Sufyān is safe." He then stood at the entrance of Makkah with al-ʿAbbās and watched all of the Anṣār and Muhājirūn march past carrying the banner of Islām. The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم asked al-ʿAbbās: "O ʿAbbās, where is Abū Sufyān?" And al-ʿAbbās said: "He is watching." The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said: "Leave him; perhaps Allah is granting him a final honor before his death."
He lost one eye at the Battle of Ṭāʾif after his conversion, and lost his other eye at the Battle of al-Yarmūk against the Byzantines, dying as a soldier for Islām. His son Muʿāwiyah founded the Umayyad dynasty.
