Al-Muttalib ibn Abd Manaf

Brother of Hāshim ibn ʿAbd Manāf and great-great-uncle of the Prophet ﷺ. One of the four sons of ʿAbd Manāf (along with Hāshim, ʿAbd Shams, and Nawfal). He handled the Qurayshi caravan to Yemen (riḥlat al-shitāʾ, the winter journey).

He is historically significant for discovering Hāshim's son Shayba living in Yathrib, the boy who would become ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib, the Prophet's grandfather. Years after Hāshim's death, al-Muṭṭalib learned of or recognized the young man during a trip through Yathrib. He convinced the teenager to come to Makkah, persuading him with the prospect of his true inheritance as Hāshim's son. He left Yathrib quickly, without Salmā knowing, and brought the boy back on his camel. The Makkans assumed the boy was al-Muṭṭalib's slave, coining the name ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib that would last forever.
