Biography
Fāṭimah رضي الله عنها was the youngest daughter of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم and Khadijah رضي الله عنها, and the only one of his children to outlive him. She married ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib رضي الله عنه and was the mother of al-Ḥasan and al-Ḥusayn, through whom the Prophet's صلى الله عليه وسلم lineage continues.
On the Prophet's صلى الله عليه وسلم deathbed, he called Fāṭimah close and whispered something to her; she wept. He then called her again and whispered something else; she laughed. Months later ʿAisha asked what the two whispers had been. Fāṭimah said: 'The first time he told me he was about to die. I could not help but cry. Then he called me again and said: You will be the first of my family to meet me. And so I laughed.' She died only months after the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم, as he had foretold.
Significance
Through Fatimah رضي الله عنها the Prophet's صلى الله عليه وسلم lineage was carried forward; she is among the greatest of women in Islamic history and the first of his family to join him after his death.
