Usayrim (al-Usayrim of Banu Abd al-Ashhal)

The last pagan of the Banū ʿAbd al-Ashhal for years after the entire tribe embraced Islam. On the morning of the Battle of Uḥud, he suddenly converted, took the Shahādah, and rushed to join the Muslim army. His tribesmen challenged him: "Are you fighting out of tribal solidarity, or for the sake of Allāh and His Messenger?" He answered: "For Allāh and His Messenger." They brought him to the Prophet ﷺ, who confirmed his sincerity.

He fought, received mortal wounds, and died as a shaheed before Ṣalāt al-Ẓuhr, having converted after Fajr and never praying a single rakʿah. There was simply no time.

The Prophet ﷺ said: "Innahu ʿamila qalīlan wa ujira kathīran, wa innahu min ahl al-Jannah, He did very little, but was rewarded greatly. He is among the people of Jannah."

Abū Hurayrah used to quiz his students: "Who can tell me the name of the man who entered Jannah without having prayed a single rakʿah to Allāh?" The answer: al-Uṣayrim of the Banū ʿAbd al-Ashhal.
