Al-Usayrim: The Man Who Entered Jannah Without a Single Rak'ah

When the Banū ʿAbd al-Ashhal tribe converted en masse upon the conversions of Saʿd ibn Muʿādh and Usayd ibn Ḥuḍayr, one man held out. His name was al-Uṣayrim. He remained a pagan for years while his entire tribe became Muslim around him.

Abū Hurayrah, one of the greatest collectors of hadith, used to quiz his students:

"Who can tell me the name of the man who entered Jannah while he never prayed a single rakʿah to Allāh Subḥānahu wa Taʿālā?"

The students would not know. Abū Hurayrah would answer: "He is al-Uṣayrim of the Banū ʿAbd al-Ashhal."

On the morning of the Battle of Uḥud, when the Muslim army was assembling to march out and face a Qurayshi force of 3,000, al-Uṣayrim suddenly converted. He took the Shahādah and rushed to join the Muslim ranks.

His tribesmen were alarmed and challenged him: "Oh Uṣayrim, are you fighting out of tribal solidarity? Or because you love Allāh and His Messenger?" They asked because victory comes from sincerity, not from numbers. They were already outnumbered three to one and could not afford doubt.

Uṣayrim said: "I am now a Muslim. I am here for the sake of Allāh and His Messenger."

They brought him to the Prophet ﷺ, who questioned him and confirmed his sincerity. Uṣayrim converted after Ṣalāt al-Fajr on the morning of Uḥud. He fought. He received mortal wounds. He died as a shaheed before the time of Ṣalāt al-Ẓuhr, having converted only a few hours before.

He never prayed a single rakʿah. There was no time.

The Prophet ﷺ said:

"Innahu ʿamila qalīlan wa ujira kathīran, wa innahu min ahl al-Jannah."

"He did very little, but he was rewarded greatly. And he is among the people of Jannah."

This is one of the most important principles in Islam: what counts is sincerity of intention and the direction of the heart. Allāh does not hold a person accountable for obligations they had no time to fulfill. If the time for Ṣalāh had come, al-Uṣayrim would have prayed. He converted at Fajr and was martyred before Ẓuhr. The acts of worship were not required of him in that window.

Al-Uṣayrim is the only Companion of the Prophet ﷺ known to us who entered Jannah without having prayed.
