Biography
ʿUthmān ibn Maẓʿūn رضي الله عنه was a companion of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم from the Banū Jumaḥ clan of Quraysh. He was among the fifteen who made the first Hijra to Abyssinia in Rajab of the fifth year of the Dawah. He was unmarried at the time of this emigration.
He was known for deep piety and asceticism (zuhd), and the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم is narrated to have corrected him at one point for taking asceticism too far and ignoring his wife's rights. He was the first of the Muhājirūn to die in Madīnah, and the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم is reported to have kissed him after his death. He was buried in al-Baqīʿ.
