Four Uncles, Four Destinies: Lineage Means Nothing

historical note

At the end of the public preaching on Mount Ṣafāʾ, the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم called out the names of his aunts and uncles. Among them were four of the sons of ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib, his direct paternal uncles. Same father. Same Meccan household. Same lineage. And four completely different destinies.

In this is a lesson that the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم himself preached from the mountain that day: your lineage will not save you. It is what you do that matters.

Ḥamza ibn ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib رضي الله عنه: Sayyid al-Shuhadāʾ

The highest rank of all: Sayyid al-Shuhadāʾ, the Master of the Martyrs. No one in the entire history of Islam among those who died shahīd occupies a higher rank than Ḥamza. When the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم stood on Ṣafāʾ and called his name, he could not yet have known that this uncle would one day become the greatest martyr in the history of Islam. Yet his name was called like everyone else's: "O Ḥamza, save yourself from the fire of Hell."

al-ʿAbbās ibn ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib رضي الله عنه

Al-ʿAbbās converted to Islam and is the ancestor of the ʿAbbāsid dynasty. He is a righteous companion of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم. But he is not among the Ten Promised Paradise, not among the elite inner circle of the earliest companions. He is Muslim, and a good Muslim, but his rank does not reach the level of Ḥamza or the earliest converts. It was al-ʿAbbās who, after the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم had already passed away, asked him in a dream about Abū Ṭālib, and whose question produced the famous narration about Abū Ṭālib's punishment.

Abū Ṭālib: highest of all non-believers

Abū Ṭālib believed in his heart. He protected the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم for fifty years. He sacrificed his livelihood, his comfort, his prestige, he went and lived with the Muslims in the boycott valley even as a non-Muslim, because he had promised his nephew he would never abandon him. He is the one who confronted all of Quraysh alone.

But he died without the Kalimah. And so the mercy of Allah came to him in the only form left: the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم made duʿāʾ, and Allah accepted it, not to bring him to Jannah, but to give him the lightest of all punishments in Jahannam. As the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said: "No one in Jahannam is punished less than Abū Ṭālib." He stands at the highest station possible for a non-believer, and that station is still Jahannam, because shirk cannot be forgiven. This is not cruelty; this is divine justice, and within that justice, the maximum mercy permitted.

Abū Lahab: the only enemy of Islam named in the Quran

And then there is Abū Lahab. ʿAbd al-ʿUzzā ibn ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib, the Prophet's صلى الله عليه وسلم direct uncle, born of the same grandfather. Who attended a dinner in his nephew's house and then sabotaged it before the speech could begin. Who stood on the mountain of Ṣafāʾ and threw sand at his own nephew and said, "May you be ruined, O Muḥammad."

Among all the enemies of Islam in history, Pharaoh, Abū Jahl, every tyrant who ever opposed a Prophet, only one is named by name in the Quran:

تَبَّتْ يَدَا أَبِي لَهَبٍ وَتَبَّ

"Perish the two hands of Abū Lahab, and he has already perished."

Every Muslim who recites this sūrah until the Day of Judgment repeats the curse of Allah upon him. By name. Not by title. Not by alias. By name.

These four brothers. The same father. The same Qurayshi household, the same lineage, the same social standing. One became the Master of the Martyrs. One became a righteous companion and the ancestor of a dynasty. One became the highest of all non-believers. And one became the only enemy of Allah mentioned by name in the eternal Book.

Your lineage is not your destiny. Your actions are.
