The Dagger at the Tawaf: Fudalah

Shaykh Yasir Qadhi explains:

Not everyone submitted at once; some delayed over the roughly nineteen days the Prophet ﷺ stayed in Mecca. One young Qurashī, Fuḍālah ibn ʿUmayr, so embittered by the defeat that he no longer cared for his own life, hid a dagger and closed on the Prophet ﷺ as he made one of his many ṭawāfs, a moment when people gave him space. As Fuḍālah reached for the blade the Prophet ﷺ turned: "Is this Fuḍālah? What were you planning?" "Nothing, only dhikr," he lied. The Prophet ﷺ laughed at the plain lie, laid a hand on his chest, and said, "Seek Allāh's forgiveness." Fuḍālah said that from the moment that hand touched his chest, no one in all the world was more beloved to him, and he embraced Islam, the plot dissolved into nothing.
