The Ansar's Fear: Your Life Is My Life
historicalShaykh Yasir Qadhi explains:
Seeing the Prophet ﷺ back among his own people and kin, the Anṣār began to murmur, out of love and fear: "Now that he has returned home, tenderness for his people has taken him, he will forget us and stay in Mecca." Jibrīl brought word of it. When he had finished the pledges, the Prophet ﷺ called them: يَا مَعْشَرَ الْأَنْصَار, "did you say the love of my kin has softened me?" Put on the spot, they confessed. (Note that though Allāh had told him, he still asked them first, the courtesy of verifying, even with a watertight source.)
Then he said, "Who am I? I am the servant of Allāh and His Messenger. I emigrated to Allāh and to you", recalling his promise at al-ʿAqabah, "your blood is my blood." فَالْمَحْيَا مَحْيَاكُمْ وَالْمَمَاتُ مَمَاتُكُمْ, "my life is your life, my death is your death; we are one." The Anṣār wept and begged pardon, saying they had spoken only from what they feared; and he said, إِنَّ اللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُ يُصَدِّقَانِكُمْ وَيَعْذِرَانِكُم, "Allāh and His Messenger believe you and excuse you."
